Puppetmongers Theatre a été créé en 1974 par Ann Powell et David Powell (frère et soeur), co-directeurs artistique. Depuis la création de la compagnie, ils se sont consacrés à la création de nouvelles pièces et au maintien de leur répertoire de spectacles originaux, désormais au nombre de douze. Ils créent pour un public familial et scolaire et développent également des travaux pour les adultes. Puppetmongers joue à travers le Canada et les États-Unis, ainsi que dans le Royaume-Uni, la France, la Belgique, l'Allemagne, l'Iran... Leurs activités vont de la commande aux collaborations avec d'autres artistes, des performances scolaires aux ateliers et sorties d'une journée à travers la grande région de Toronto et du sud de l'Ontario. Les artistes étant plutôt âgés, la communauté artistique se rapproche souvent d'eux en tant que conseillers mentors, concepteurs et constructeurs. Ils sont devenus une ressource inestimable pour les éducateurs et les groupes communautaires locaux et nationaux. Ils sont régulièrement invités à participer à des festivals nationaux et internationaux de marionnettes, et sont de plus en plus appelés en tant que professeurs de Master Classes. Les Puppetmongers ont également fondé la Toronto School of Puppetry en 1996 comme un moyen de diffuser davantage l'histoire, les techniques et les idées des arts de la marionnette pour les apprenants adultes. Dans le contexte de l'école, ils ont appris à présenter de nombreux ateliers, y compris des sessions avec Old Trout Puppet Workshop de Calgary, des réalisateurs tels que Mark Cassidy du Threshold Theater et David Craig du Roseneath Theatre, le musicien et compositeur Rick Sacks, la danseuse-chorégraphe Yvonne Ng, de Princess Productions et bien d'autres. En plus de cette contribution à l'éducation de leurs pairs, ils ont lancé Fresh Ideas in Puppetry en 2006, réunissant des marionnettistes de film, de la télévision et du théâtre pour partager leurs innovations. Fresh Ideas est un forum annuel interdisciplinaire de démonstrations, discussions et spectacles courts qui visent à faciliter la pollinisation croisée dans le milieu artistique. Puppetmongers a involontairement inspiré la fondation de trois compagnies de marionnettes (à Windsor, au Royaume-Uni et en Belgique). Ils ont même donné leur nom à une technique particulière de cet art en Iran : il y a maintenant la «Technique Powell». Summary :
Puppetmongers Theatre was established in 1974 by the sister and brother Co-Artistic Director team of Ann Powell and David Powell. Since the inception of Puppetmongers,they have been dedicated to new play development and to maintaining their repertoire of original shows, now twelve in number. They create work for family and school audiences and also develop work for adults. Puppetmongers has performed throughout Canada and the US, as well as in the UK, France, Belgium, Germany and Iran and, since 1990, have been presenting their Annual Winter Holiday Tradition of performances for family audiences in Toronto. The activities of the company include commissions and collaborations with other artists, school performances, workshops and run-outs throughout the greater Toronto area and Southern Ontario. As senior artists, the performing arts community often approaches the Powell as advisers mentors, designers and builders, and Puppetmongers has become an invaluable resource to educators and community groups locally and nationally. They are regularly invited to participate in national and international puppetry festivals, and they are increasingly called upon as teachers of Master Classes. Puppetmongers founded the Toronto School of Puppetry in 1996 as a vehicle for further disseminating the history, techniques and ideas of the art form to adult learners. In the context of the School they have taught and presented many workshops including sessions with Old Trout Puppet Workshop of Calgary, directors such as Mark Cassidy of Threshold Theater and David Craig of Roseneath Theatre, musician and composer Rick Sacks, dancer/choreographer Yvonne Ng of Princess Productions and many others. In addition to this contribution to the education of their peers, they initiated Fresh Ideas in Puppetry in 2006, bringing together puppeteers from film, TV and theatre to share their innovations. Fresh Ideas is an annual interdisciplinary forum of demonstrations, discussion, and short performances that aims to facilitate cross-pollination in the arts community. Puppetmongers has unintentionally inspired the founding of three puppet companies - in Windsor, the UK and Belgium - and has influenced many artists across the Americas and Europe. They have been Canadian artistic ambassadors: in Iranian puppetry, there is now the "Powell Technique", for puppets with handles in their backs controlled by visible manipulators.
